Food Safety for Beekeepers Panel with Andy Pedley

For our final webinar of this winter series, we’re delighted to host a Food Safety panel session on Wednesday the 3rd of April from 7.30pm with Andy Pedley. Andy was an Environmental Health Officer for 46 years and has been a beekeeper for over 30 years. In this informative panel, Andy will be discussing the importance of knowledge of Food Safety processes for beekeepers and providing advice on practical actions. Honey and Bees of South Africa with Natasha Lyon & Mike Allsopp

Wednesday 6th March 2024

This will be an evening on all things South African beekeeping: Natasha Lyon is a South African honey expert, and Mike Allsopp is a bee scientist at the Agricultural Research Council and an expert in Apis M. Capensis. They will discuss the bees of South Africa, including Apis M. Capensis and Apis M. Scutellata, the diverse flora of South Africa, their beekeeping year, and the honey varieties enjoyed.

Bees and Fungi with Dr Nicholas Naeger

Wednesday 7th February 2024

February it’s all about fungi, when we welcome Dr Nicholas Naeger at 7.30pm on Wednesday the 7th of February. In this illuminating talk, Dr Naeger will discuss the interaction between bees, fungi, and their pathogens. He will then discuss his research at Washington State University into bee immune health, the potential nutritional benefits of fungi, and possible therapeutic uses of fungi against bee pathogens. PTSD and Pollinators with Master Sergeant Kate Flynn

We welcome US Air Force Security Forces Veteran and Iowa Bee Farmer - Master Sgt Kate Flinn. Kate will discuss overcoming Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mental health problems through beekeeping, and will introduce the charity ‘PTSD and Pollinators’ that she supports to help veterans overcome PTSD

An Introduction to Apitherapy with Dr Cristina Mateescu

Wednesday 13th December 2023

Dr Cristina Mateescu shall be discussing her role as Scientific Lead on Apitherapy for Apimondia, the International Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations, as well as introducing the subject of Apitherapy. Apitherapy is a branch of complementary and alternative medicine that uses honey bee products, including honey, pollen, bee bread, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, bee venom and larval bees. In various parts of the world, apitherapy has different meanings and definitions.

The Bees of Tasmania with Andrew Abraham

Wednesday 1st November 2023

Andrew Abrahams has kept bees commercially on Colonsay for over 30 years and has wide experience of honey production and queen rearing. He holds the Scottish Beekeepers’ Association Master Beekeeper’s Certificate and has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Agriculture. Colonsay is home to one of Europe’s few populations of pure Black Bees (Apis mellifera mellifera) the UK’s native honey bee. Following a brief mention of the bees of Tasmania in his previous webinar, Andrew will share more on these dark bees and their history in Tasmania.

The Nest of the Honey bee with Prof Jürgen Tautz

Wednesday 5th April 2023

Prof Tautz will be joining us online on Wednesday the 5th of April to talk about the nest of the honey bee. Prof Tautz is a behavioural scientist, socio-biologist and bee expert. He is Professor of the Biocentre at the Julius-Maximilians-University in Würzburg, Germany and founder and chair of its BEE research group. He is also the author of several popular science books on bees and holder of the Communicator Award of the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – German Research Foundation).

My First Year in Bee Health with Lorraine Johnston

Lorraine shares with us her experiences and activities over the last year in her new role as the SRUC’s Bee Advisor and as part of the Scottish Government’s Bee Health team. Lorraine will be a familiar face to many Scottish beekeepers, whether that’s as Chair of the South of Scotland Beekeepers’ Association, as the founder of Annan Academy’s Bee Club or at the many beekeeping events and local association talks across the country.
